“Iris” — Goo Goo Dolls

Whenever I hear Iris, my mind immediately goes to a Nicolas Cage movie. More specifically, City of Angels — Hollywood’s remake of Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire. Like so many remakes, something subtle and profound was lost along the way. It’s hard not to feel that Hollywood took something beautiful and overexplained it.

But then this song plays.

“I don’t want the world to see me”
That line still echoes in my head every time. Somehow, Iris managed to capture the vulnerability, longing, and quiet humanity that the movie itself struggled to hold onto.

And now, the song carries another meaning for me. I think of Daisy. This is one of her favourite songs, and because of that, it has been gently rewritten in my heart. Music does that — it layers memory upon memory, until a song becomes more than sound.

Iris isn’t just tied to a movie anymore.

It’s tied to her.
