“Believe It or Not” – Joey Scarbury
With the limited number of shows we received in T&T, the theme song from The Greatest American Hero stood out immediately. Believe It or Not was the kind of song you couldn’t help but sing again and again long after the episode ended.
Television in my childhood was both scarce and special. We watched what was available, and somehow that made it matter more. Alongside The Greatest American Hero, there were The Six Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman, Man from Atlantis, The Fall Guy, Three’s Company, Diff rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, Sanford & Son, Charlie’s Angels, The Jeffersons, Soap, What’s Happening!!, and The Benny Hill Show, to name a few.
After a full day working in the store, our family would sit down together in front of a 22-inch Toshiba tube television. There was no fighting over the remote there wasn’t one. No arguments about what to watch –there was only one channel. We watched as a family, sharing laughter and theme songs, believing, if only for a half hour, that this was exactly where we were meant to be.
